Il Mare - I continues with the ocean theme that has captivated me as of late. This is the first piece that I began experimenting with underpainting in the highlights and shadows with different colors.
As with all my other pieces, I began with a piece of Smooth Bristol Board masked out with artist's masking tape. From there, I progressed to a very simple pencil sketch, which I glazed over with yellow watercolor for the sunny highlights and blue watercolor for the ocean and the more shadowy areas.
From there, I laid in more color to build out the textures of the ocean and the sand, as well as the red of the boat and the line on the reel. It wasn't until I had finished the watercolor that I began to ink everything in with the Van Dyke Brown Dr. Ph Martin's India Ink to highlight the form of the boat and other "human-made" objects.
