Philosophy

”To become an Artist you have to be curious.”
— Leonardo da Vinci

For as long as I can remember, I have always been curious, so much so that when I was little my parents purchased a plethora of books dedicated towards answering my questions. If memory serves me correctly, there was even on entitled “The Answer Book”.

So, at the simplest level, one could say that I adhere to a philosophy of curiosity. Somehow this philosophy has stayed with me throughout my adulthood, despite the onslaught of assaults rendered by modern Western (read Anglo-Saxon) society.  Truth be told, I identify more with cultures originating from the Mediterranean, an area which has given birth to multiple cultures with an affinity for art, not only the Greeks and Romans, but also Egypt could be considered part of this cohort.

In terms of philosophy, I view myself as more of a mystic influenced by branches of Alchemy rooted in the Platonic and Pythagorean philosophies of Ancient Greece. As I have mentioned elsewhere, I have particular affinity for Göethe’s “Theory of Color”, which is more phenomenological than mathematical in its approach.

As far as mathematics is concerned, I take more of a Geometric view of the world, preferring to start with “Everything, All at Once” in the form of an All-Encompassing Whole rather than viewing the world as essentially broken and in need of repair. As the children’s nursery rhyme reminds us, “All the kings horses and all the kings men couldn’t put Humpty together again”. Perhaps the antidote to our “fragmented” world is to realize that we are the ones who fragment it through our indiscriminate use of language and number.

I believe that art has the possibility to reach beyond the fragmentation of language and bring us back to the realm of experience where feelings and sentiments of Beauty reign supreme. At least that is my perspective at this particular point in time — in a dynamic world of change I fully expect to have different insights and perspectives at some point, perhaps even tomorrow.
