After working on Il Mare - I, I decided to continue with the underpainting and working with water. This piece is based upon a foto that I took on my way through Boston after returning to Stati Uniti from Italia.
As with my previous piece, I began with a simple pencil sketch and an underpainting of yellow for the sunlight and blue for the shadows. I used a minimal of ink, and focused upon developing texture and shadow by working with the watercolor.
The shadows in the stone walkway took an inordinate amount of time, if for no other reason than their size and the amount of fine detail. This is one of the pieces where having a good brush makes a huge difference. The Tintoretto brushes that I have been using hold an incredible amount of paint without dropping or "splooshing" at inopportune times.
As with the last piece, I finished the details in Boston Harbor - I with the Van Dyke Brown india ink, whose warmth married well with the yellow tones of the sunrise on the harbor.
