The Mystic Drawbridge - I

This piece began as an idea for a potential gift for someone in my family. While it is more than likely that I will revisit this piece, with an altogether different perspective, it represents a divergence from my usual focus upon architecture and stonework.

This piece began as an idea for a potential gift for someone in my family. While it is more than likely that I will revisit this piece, with an altogether different perspective, it represents a divergence from my usual focus upon architecture and stonework. When viewed from an Alchemical perspective, it can be viewed as transitioning from the Element of Earth, to the Element of Water, perhaps as an attempt to cool and soothe my soul in the summer heat.

This piece was challenging on several levels. First and foremost, I was amazed at just how many intersecting lines there were for the bridge — and straight lines to boot. The ancient architecture in Italia is anything but straight. The buildings in Pari are formed out of a series of sensual curves reminiscent of the raw, organic nature of the landscape which is made up of similar stones.

The second challenge of this piece was the color palette itself. I found myself suddenly thrust into a world blues and greens (along with a tinge of yellow sunlight on the clapboard structures) very different from the earthy tones of stones.

Although this piece didn’t come out quite as expected, it does pay homage to a place where I used to go with my parents and siblings when I was little.
