Il Mare - I
After working on “The Mystic Drawbridge - I”, I realized how much I missed the water and decided to work on this piece to commemorate my first time visiting the Mediterranean Sea.
After working on “The Mystic Drawbridge - I”, I realized how much I missed the water and decided to work on this piece to commemorate my first time visiting the Mediterranean Sea. This piece is based off of a picture that I took of a lifeboat while visiting the sea in Grosseto, Italia. This piece represents my first attempt at working directly in watercolor from my pencil sketch instead of dipping directly into ink.
I was curious as to whether I would be able to create more of a watery texture by setting aside the structure of the ink. I also wanted to begin experimenting more with light and shadow through underpainting, and this piece provided me with the perfect opportunity to experiment with these new techniques.
I was pleasantly surprised with the results of my experiment, especially with the water, sand and shadow worked together with each other. I may revisit this piece at some point and combine the flowing motion of the sea and sand with a more detailed depiction of the lifeboat.
Either way, the softness of this piece captures the feel of summertime at the sea, an experience that I hope to revisit again!
