This is a commission of a yellow lab that a friend of a friend wanted me to paint as a birthday gift to her grandson. Due to the tight timeline (and prevalence of white and paler tones) I changed up my process for this piece. Instead of working through a pencil drawing, inking, and reworking, I decided to create several sketches in pencil after cropping the photos to the correct proportions. I made five pencil sketches of Wiggy in four days. Staying in pencil allowed me to tweak Wiggy’s position, as well as his proportions. When I worked on the final piece, I laid out a sketch in pencil, inked, erased, and colored it in for the final step. Several days later, I found out that the child had been absolutely thrilled with the painting, even going so far as to thank my friend for introducing his grandmother to me.
