This was my third attempt at painting a portrait of my friend, Jodie. Although there is a beauty to this piece, I find it difficult to see my friend in this painting, perhaps due to proportions, perhaps due to my mixing of color. Hair that is almost black is incredibly challenging, especially in watercolor, where the white of the paper is supposed to serve as the lightest tone of the painting. I spent a fair amount of time on the texture of my friend’s hair, as I have always been fascinated with the work of Alphonse Mucha and his “spaghetti” curls.
