Good Dog - I

This was the second sketch that I did for my latest dog commission and I had just heard the words that every artist dreads (unless someone you trust utters them). Just seconds before, my friend Liz had said, "I know what you're trying to do … and it's not going to work." As soon as I heard her statement, I knew she was right, but wanted to understand why. The photo that I was working off of had poor lighting, and Liz had picked up on it. Because of this issue, there was no way that I would ever be able to get the eyes right … regardless of how much I liked the pose.
