King Leo - I

After sketching for the better part of this year, I finally decided to go back to the pen and innk to create a piece of artwork. I have been wanted to do a piece of Leo for quite some time now, however, for the longest time I just wasn't quite sure how I wanted to proceed.

After working on an initial sketch, I decided to work with black, instead of sepia, India ink. From my experiments last year, I learned that I can use less black ink than the sepia to make an effective mark. Of course, the corollary to this is that the ink can easily become too dark if one exercises too much pressure upon the metal nib.

Fortunately, after practicing sketching with the pencils for so long, my touch with the metal nib has become much gentler than it was even just a few months ago. So, meet Leo, my first artwork of the year. I do anticipate creating another portrait of him at some point by layering in watercolor over the ink.
